Over 30 youth leaders in the Region were capacitated by the DENR CALABARZON through its 4th Camp Hike Plant and 2024 IEC Action Planning at Dels Garden and Resort at the foot of Mts. Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape (MBSCPL) in Dolores, Quezon last November 22-24, 2023.

In celebration of the National Environmental Awareness Month, the three-day camp employed various activities such as environmental lectures on Social and Behavior Change Approach, History and significance of MBSCPL, Biodiversity, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, and Values Formation, Spoken Word Poetry Contest, and Amazing Race.

In his message, DENR CALABARZON Regional Executive Director emphasized the worsening threat of climate change. “Nararamdaman na po natin ang epekto ng climate change at hindi na po biro ang pagbabago ng klima – dumoble po ang dami ng bagyo at mas tumindi ang intensidad nito”, he said.

Tamoria also encouraged the participation of the youth leaders as multipliers in raising awareness on pressing environmental issues. “Ang layunin po ng ating Camp Hike Plant ay para mabigyan kayo ng ideya upang sa pagbabalik natin sa ating komunidad ay makapagbahagi tayo bilang mga lider, empleyado, at estudyante ng karagdagang kaalaman kung paano tayo makakatulong para maibsan ang impact ng climate change”, he stressed.

On the other hand, the Technical Services Division Chief of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office - Quezon For. Julieta P. Narte said that the activity serves as an avenue for knowledge sharing especially in the formulation of the Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Plans and Information and Education Campaign (IEC) Plans. During the activity, participants were engaged in a writeshop and were tasked to formulate their respective IEC Action Plans and SBC Plans by province.

The Sangguniang Kabataan representatives were challenged to integrate environmental activities in their local plans and programs which will be implemented in 2024. The SKs committed to initiate the execution of the proposed activities through creation of Sangguniang Barangay resolutions.

Also, the participants showcased their talents during the first night of the activity. Quezon National High School (QNHS) SinTaLab (Sining Tanghal Laboratoryo) presented a short play about Mt. Banahaw which was followed by a Spoken Word Poetry Contest with the theme, “Circular Actions for Climate Hope”.

On its last day, the youth participants hiked Mt. Banahaw and planted 200 seedlings of Narra and Molave.

The said activity was participated in by 84 individuals (36 male, 37 female, 11 LGBTQIA) composed of DENR CALABARZON PENROs and CENROs Information Officers, Youth Desk Officers, selected Sangguniang Kabataan representatives of each province, students from QNHS, DENR CALABARZON RSCIG personnel, and MBSCPL PAMO Staff. Speakers for the lectures were PENRO Quezon Development Management Officer III Ms. Melinda G. Gordo, MS. April Joy R. Cruz of the Municipal DRRM Office of Dolores, Quezon, Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group Chief For. Judaline A. Fabro, and MBSCPL Park Maintenance Foreman Mr. Magtanggol Barrion.
