Employees of the DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Tayabas City recently participated in the Nationwide Earthquake Drill and lecture initiated by Tayabas City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO).

Under the guidance of the experts from DRRMO, the CENR Office’s premises buzzed with activity as the employees gathered at designated evacuation points. The activity exemplified a shared commitment to preparedness and responsiveness in the face of probable seismic events.

Dr. Rosario P. Bandelaria, RN, MSN, LPT, CDGH1 of DRRMO Tayabas, provided valuable insights into earthquake preparedness through a lecture where she emphasized the importance of staying informed and shared some observations, at the end of the activity.

One Scops Owl was released to the forest area of Brgy. Camaysa, Tayabas City, Quezon, by the personnel under the Monitoring and Enforcement Section (MES) of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Tayabas City on November 9, 2023.

The said wildlife was turned over by a concerned citizen, with the help of the City Government of Lucena, through Mr. Ulpiano Fedencio M. Tabernilla, a deputized Wildlife Enforcement Officer (WEO).

According to Tabernilla, the wildlife was captured by the resident inside their house on November 6, 2023, at around 7 o'clock in the evening, while they were having dinner, in Brgy. Ilayang Iyam, Lucena City, Quezon.

Before the release, the wildlife underwent a thorough veterinary examination, done by Ms. Melanie R. Hernandez, DVM, where she carefully examined the owl and confirmed its overall good health condition.

This activity aligns with the principles of the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147) to preserve, and encourage ecological balance, and biological diversity for the preservation and protection of wildlife species and their natural habitats.

As part of the National Clean Air Month celebration, a tree planting activity was conducted within the Quezon Protected Landscape, Sitio Amao, Brgy. Silangang Malicboy, Pagbilao, Quezon on November 11, 2023. 

During the activity, a total of 130 Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) seedlings were planted within the said protected area by twenty-six participants (21 males and 5 females) from the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), residents, CENRO Tayabas, and Protected Area Management Office – Quezon Protected Landscape (PAMO-QPL) staff.

Before the tree planting proper, a short program was conducted where Forest Ranger Prahlad P. Alzola shared some information regarding the protected area including its background/history and location. He also shared some information regarding National Clean Air Month which is celebrated in November every year, and the importance of planting trees that contribute to a healthier environment and promote the well-being of the community in the protected area.

Furthermore, Forest Extension Officer Joon Byrwyn A. Jariel also oriented the participants on the proper handling of trees and the planting process to ensure the survival of the seedlings.

DENR-CENRO Real, Quezon turned over a rescued Philippine hawk eagle (Nisaetus philippensis) to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center located in Brgy. Lamot II, Calauan, Laguna.

The Wildlife Enforcement Officers of CENRO Real received a chat message from a concerned citizen about the wildlife that was found along the road by a tricycle driver at Purok Curva, Brgy. Dinahican, Infanta, Quezon. The concerned citizen gave the animal to Ms. Rose Marie Sotto who posted the wildlife in different Infanta websites to reach the authorities. Based on the assessment, the wildlife had a wound in its left wing.

Due to the non-availability of a veterinary doctor for this kind of wildlife, the wildlife was immediately brought to the rescue center for custody and safekeeping.

In support to the nationwide observance of the 18-day campaign to end Violence Against Women (VAW), PENRO Laguna through the Gender and Development Focal Point System has lined up activities to be conducted from November 25, 2023 to December 12, 2023 such as discussion of the campaign during Monday convocation, display of the official banner and Safe Spaces Act posters, redesigning of the GAD Corner (Orange Exhibit), dissemination of pamphlets on laws and policies about VAW, video showing, and online advocacy campaign through the use of various social media sites to heighten awareness on the advocacy campaign, and enjoining every Juan and Juana to take a stand against VAW. 

The said campaign is held annually, every 25th of November to the 12th of December by Proclamation No. 1172 series of 2006 and Republic Act 10398 or the Act declaring every 25th of November as the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of VAW.  For 2023, the 18-day campaign will center around the recurring six-year (2022-2027) theme: “UNITEd for a VAW-free Philippines”. This aligns with the UN Women’s Unite by 2030 to End VAW Campaign (UNITE) highlighting the significant impact of combined individual efforts towards a collaborative and united thrust for a VAW-free Philippines.
