The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) presented to DENR-PENRO Cavite the outputs of its field validation activity on land cover mapping in the province, on September 29, 2023 in Trece Martires, Cavite.

The said activity was attended by 20 representatives from DENR-PENRO Cavite and the Provincial Government of Cavite represented by the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office and Provincial Planning and Development Office.

NAMRIA utilized advanced geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) to generate timely and updated geospatial information in the province. By using high-resolution satellite imagery, NAMRIA employs an Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach to accurately map and classify land cover in Cavite. OBIA utilizes image segmentation to group pixels into meaningful objects based on spatial, spectral and temporal properties unlike the traditional pixel-based classification method.

NAMRIA uses the said approach to achieve a high degree of accuracy in mapping detailed land cover classes such as the forest areas, built-up areas, and various agricultural land uses. The detailed knowledge about the distribution of land cover types will help the local government units and organizations set their direction on land use zoning, infrastructures development, disaster risk reduction and natural resource management.

Cavite’s dense population and rapid urbanization put pressure on ecosystems and natural resources. NAMRIA’s maps support responsible and coordinated development by providing stakeholders with information to consider environmental-friendly alternatives that would help minimize possible adverse impact from development.

DENR promotes and relies on the use of accurate and updated geographic information to understand the changes in land use which will be useful in making informed decisions towards the sustainable use of land. NAMRIA provides this critical information through land cover mapping projects across the Philippines.###
