As part of the continuous effort of the DENR in the rehabilitation of Manila Bay including its major tributaries, such as Laguna De Bay, river rangers are hired to help the DENR and local government units (LGUs) to address indiscriminate waste disposal particularly in various water bodies.

PENRO Laguna since March 2020 hired a total of 32 river rangers which are assigned in the five priority rivers namely Cabuyao River, San Cristobal River, San Juan River, Binan River and Saran River. According to the approved Work and Financial Plan (WFP) of Manila Bay Site Coordinating Management Office (MBSCMO) – Laguna, for the fiscal year 2020, 60 river rangers are to be hired, however, implementation of activities and targets were temporarily delayed due to the community quarantines amidst Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

River rangers are tasked to conduct cleaning of river and its tributaries from all kinds of debris, record actual solid waste collected daily using the prescribed format, conduct daily patrolling and prepare report with photos of the apprehended violators, monitor the waste disposal along the stretch of the priority rivers, conduct Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign to raise public awareness on the significance of solid waste segregation and supervise and lead weekly clean-up drive within the priority rivers participated by the community.

Number of river rangers to be hired will be doubled (120) starting July 2020 and activities will resume for the remaining two quarters of 2020.  ###
