The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON and Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines (GEP), Inc. convened to formalize its partnership for the adoption of a plantation site in Quezon Protected Landscape (QPL), Brgy. Silangang Malicboy, Pagbilao, Quezon on October 11, 2023.

GEP formally pledged to develop and maintain the 35-hectare fruit tree plantation established under the National Greening Program (NGP) in 2013, adhering to Program’s standards and supporting the preservation of biodiversity in the protected area.

DENR CALABARZON Regional Executive Director Nilo Tamoria lauded GEP for its proactive stance. He said GEP’s initiative is exceptional as the organization went beyond planting trees but instead adopted an NGP area that they will improve and maintain for the next 5 years.

The regional department head also emphasized that, despite fulfilling the initial requirements and responsibilities for establishing a plantation, the government cannot fully maintain the plantation’s success and continuous survival. “This is where other organizations are encouraged to take part in this kind of program implementation,” he said.

Cyril A. Coliflores, In-Charge, Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO), Quezon and concurrent Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO), Tayabas City, stressed in his speech during the ceremony that the roles and responsibilities of GEP in accordance with the ratified MOA includes the provision of a 5-year Development Plan for the adopted plantation site.

GEP Quezon Chapter President, Engr. Mario Jose Silvino emphasized during the event the organization’s dedication to environmental preservation. He said the organization’s promotion of sustainability is in line with Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations, “Life on Land”. He conveyed his hope that this initiative be replicated and embraced by the entire organization in the Philippines in the future.

Prior to the MOA signing ceremony, a tree planting activity was conducted, wherein, a total of 250 seedlings composed of 100 Calamansi, 75 Narra, and 100 White Nato were planted by the participants. GEP National President, Engr. Quirino Clemeno, Jr.; GEP IV Regional President, Engr. Jose Calmada, Jr.; PENRO Technical Services Division Chief, For. Julieta Narte; and Assistant CENRO of Tayabas, For. Irene Z. Arquilita also attended the event.###
