The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Forestry Society in coordination with the DENR CALABARZON conducted an Interbloc Quiz Contest entitled “Enchanted Forest: Unveil the Mystery” last October 2, 2023, in observance of the World Environmental Health Day.

The contest primarily aims to test the forestry and general knowledge of students while promoting social skills and teamwork.

Over 40 teams of new and old freshmen college students of UPLB BS Forestry, Certificate in Forestry, and Associate in Science in Forestry students participated in the activity. Each team is composed of two to three members.  Assistant Professor V Elenita G. De Castro, Assistant Professor IV Jonathan O. Hernandez, and Teaching Associate Ms. Clarence Mikko R. Jao served as the panel of judges who clarified and settled the clarifications and appeals from the teams.

Team Akle bagged first place winning Php 5,000.00 worth of Gcash, followed by Team Plantastic Three winning Php 3,000.00 worth of Gcash, while Team Pamparahas placed third receiving Php 2,000.00 worth of Gcash.

Further, this year’s World Environmental Health Day theme is “Protektahan ang #KapwaLigiran para sa ating kalusugan, araw-araw!”

Based on a 2016 study by the World Health Organization, over 12 million individuals die yearly due to pollution, climate change, and the effects of global warming. Hence, DENR CALABARZON Regional Executive Director Nilo B. Tamoria emphasized the importance of protecting the environment which has a direct effect on the health of individuals.

Tamoria stressed “Ang paglutas sa mga problemang ito ay hindi lamang responsibilidad ng DENR, bagkus ay nangangailangan ng ibayong suporta mula sa iba’t ibang sektor, pribado man o publiko, pati na rin ng mga kabataan.” He highlighted the role of youth in leading the discourse on the celebration and other pressing environmental issues through the use of social media and protect themselves from fake news. Tamoria also challenged the students and said “Pagkatapos ng aktibidad na ito,  iniiwan namin ang hamon sa inyo na isabuhay ang mga kaalamang inyong mapupulot.”

The Interbloc Quiz Contest is an annual activity of the UPLB Forestry Society conducted every start of the semester of the new academic year to welcome new and old freshmen students in the College of Forestry and Natural Resources. ###
