BRGY. RANSOHAN, LUCENA CITY | SEPTEMBER 16, 2023 - On September 16, 2023, PENRO Quezon participated in the celebration of the International Coastal Clean up with the theme "Clean Seas for Healthy Fisheries," spearheaded by the Rotary Club and City ENRO-Lucena in Barangay Ransohan, Lucena City.

Barangay Ransohan is a coastal barangay that serves as a catch basin for upstream water  accumulating debris during high tide, heavy rainfall, or storms. Despite these challenges, the community and government agencies commitment to maintaining their surroundings remains unwavering.

It was actively participated in by both private and government agencies. Notable attendees included various Rotary Club chapters (BonPen Premier, Candelaria Circle, Cosmopolitan Lucena, Lucena, Lucena Central, Lucena Circle, College Junction, Premier, South, South Premier, Lucena District, and Metro Lucena), Rotaract Club chapters (Cosmopolitan Lucena, Lucena Central, Lucena Circle, Lucena Promenade, Lucena South, and Metro Lucena), the Girl Scout of the Philippines - Lucena City, Philippine Air Force Tactical Operation Wings Southern Luzon, Department of Foreign Affairs, Coop Bank of Quezon Province, Philippine Static Authority Lucena, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Kiwanis Club chapters (Lucena City, Hiyas ng Quezon, Lucena Infinity, Lucena Aces, Metro Dupay, New Lucena Central), Agila Kalikasan - AK47, BKGII Guardians Lucena, Pacific Mall Lucena, SM City Lucena, Quezon Dynamic Steel Corp., Zonta Club of Lucena & Environs, Philippine National Police Lucena, and the Lucena City Government.

The event commenced at 6:30 in the morning. Atty. Kits Lagman, club secretary of the Rotary Club of Lucena South, hosted the event. Vice Mayor of Lucena and the President of the Rotary Club of Lucena South, Hon. Roderick "Dondon" Alcala expressed his delight at the enthusiastic participation in this environmental endeavor. City Administrator Anacleto "Jun" Alcala Jr. also gave a background on how the International Coastal Cleanup Celebration started.

A remarkable 682 kg of waste, consisting of 127 sacks and 45 plastic trash bins, was collected from a 1.2 km stretch of Barangay Ransohan, Lucena City, during the clean-up. The waste collected includes not just plastic bags, parcel packaging, junkshop rejects, and fabric or clothing but also larger items such as tires, construction debris, and sizable plastic items. Hazardous materials like broken light bulbs, cans of paint, and insecticide aerosols were also retrieved from the water's edge. Numerous bottle caps (metal and plastic), bottles (glass and plastic), and various other debris were recovered.

This achievement was made possible through the dedicated efforts of 420 participants, including 187 males, 208 females, and 25 LGBTQ+ individuals, who wholeheartedly engaged in the cause.

The event’s closing remarks were delivered by a representative of the DILG City Director, Mr. Jarrold A. Fermanez, encapsulating the successful coastal clean-up activity. Post-clean-up, participants gathered at the covered court of an elementary school in Barangay Ransohan for the awarding of certificates ceremony, recognizing their commendable contributions to this vital environmental cause.###
