In celebration of the International Day of Forests, CENRO Catanauan spearheaded a Tree Planting Activity in Brgy. Ilayang Yuni, Mulanay, Quezon on March 21, 2023.

With the theme “Healthy Forests for Healthy People”, the participants were able to plant five hundred (500) Guyabano (Annona muricata L.) seedlings within the portion of 100.0 hectares NGP Site Other Fruit Trees Plantation which was established in CY 2021. The area was selected in support of the graduated NGP Sites of CENRO Catanauan.

According to the news released by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in 2013, Guyabano provided health benefits to human beings such as pain relievers. It also fights inflammation and asthma. Likewise, it can hinder cancer cells from forming while effectively slowing down tumor growth. Hence, the said fruit bearing tree was chosen to be planted in the area in the belief that healthy forests could bring healthy people in the community.

In addition, forests and trees provide food security, protection, and home for different faunal species. Forests also reduce pollution of water, air, and noise. They play a crucial role in our environment and are called the “Lungs of the Planet” because they are a source of oxygen in the atmosphere and maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The International Day of Forests is an annual global observance that aims to raise awareness on the vital role of forests and their importance to human health, and showcase the prominence of all types of forests through activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.

The tree planting activity was participated by some DENR personnel, Barangay Officials of Brgy. Ilayang Yuni, Philippine National Police (PNP), and members of the Brgy. Ibabang Yuni at Brgy. Ilayang Yuni CBFM Farmers Association Inc. (IBA-ILA-FAR) headed by its PO President Noel A. Lisay. ###
