Last October 2021, Binangonan Municipal Police Station has apprehended wild birds enclosed in ventilated carton boxes from a driver who voluntarily stopped at their checkpoint for verification. A total of 32 pink neck doves, ten (10) of which died from heat exhaustion, and one (1) red collared dove were turned over at PENRO Rizal on the same date.

Since a violation of the applicable law under Republic Act 9147 was evident as no pertinent papers nor documents for transport and possession of such wildlife were presented during the verification, the prosecution of the case will be handled by PENRO Rizal with the driver as the witness.

Republic Act No. 9147 otherwise known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act is an act that provides conservation and protection of wildlife resources and their habitats through one of its primary objectives – the regulation of the collection and trading of wildlife.

Willfully and knowingly exploiting wildlife resources and their habitats shall be unlawful for any person, especially to those who will undertake in the trading, transporting, collecting, and even mere possession of it including their by-products and derivatives. As mandated by the said Act, the transport of any wildlife must be accompanied by a local transport permit from the respective Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office where the wildlife resides or originates.

On October 19, 2021, the remaining wild birds were then turned over from PENRO Rizal to the Biodiversity Management Bureau for safekeeping and eventual release back to their natural habitat. ###
