CENRO Calauag personnel wore orange shirts during their regular flag-raising ceremony held at CENRO Calauag office grounds to signify support and promote awareness in the advocacy to end Violence Against Women (VAW) with the recurring campaign theme “United for a VAW-free Philippines,” upholding the Philippine government’s goal of protecting the human rights of women.

In line with Memorandum Circular No. 2023-03 or the “Guide for the 2023 Observance of the 18-day campaign to end VAW” of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), several activities were rolled out by the Office in observance of the 18-day campaign including decorating the office with orange fabric, putting up of the 2023 18-day campaign roll-up banner, and display of the 2023 official advocacy streamer.

During the kick-off ceremony, the designated alternate focal person for Gender and Development (GAD), Forest Technician I Ms. Kimberly Anne Abrera, briefly discussed the significance and goal of the 18-day campaign advocacy. She further explained relevant laws such as the Republic Act No. 11313 also known as the “Safe Spaces Act” and Republic Act No. 9262 or the “Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004.” Moreover, she enumerated various examples of abuse that are not limited to women but to all genders in the form of sexual, physical, mental, and emotional aspects.

The campaign also aims to attract the public’s curiosity, at the same time, provide an opportunity to impart knowledge and awareness. In this manner, women and other genders will be aware of their rights and, hence, may further encourage the victims of gender-based violence and any forms of abuse from their respective partners to feel protected, speak up, and actively participate in a joint pursuit to have a VAW-free community.

The campaign is observed annually from November 25 to December 12, 2023. Other activities of CENRO Calauag included digital advocacy/support activity on social media platforms, reproduction and distribution of IEC materials and advocacy stickers, public viewing of videos on VAW, anti-VAW laws, and anti-VAW related services, printing and display of Safe Spaces Act posters, and putting up of Women’s Board/Wall for sharing of inspiring messages and stories.
