Cabuyao City, Laguna – An anonymous concerned citizen from Brgy. Casile, Cabuyao City, Laguna willingly surrenders one Philippine Swamphen (Porphyrio pulverulentus). The said bird species was in good condition and brought immediately to the DENR CALABARZON Regional Wildlife and Rescue Center located at Brgy. Lamot II, Calauan, Laguna.

Philippine Swamphen is a large, colorful waterbird of wetlands with a purplish-blue body and somewhat similar to Eurasian Moorhen. It used to be considered a subspecies of the purple swamphen, which it resembles, but has olive-chestnut mantle and scapulars, and the whole plumage is tinged with ash-grey It is one of the few endemic rails in the Philippines.

It is listed as a species of Least Concern both under the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species and DENR Administrative Order 2019-09: Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their Categories.

PENRO Laguna reminds the public that killing and destroying wildlife species, inflicting injury, destructing wildlife habitats, trading, collecting, hunting or possessing and transporting wildlife without the necessary permits from the DENR are considered illegal acts per Section 27 of the Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
