PENRO CAVITE CELEBRATES PHILIPPINE BAMBOO DAY 2023

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) PENRO Cavite joined the nation in celebrating the Philippine Bamboo Month 2023. The event coincided with the President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s Natal Day on September 13, 2023. It was celebrated through the planting of bamboo culms of Kawayang Tinik (𝘉𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘢) along the streambank of Cañas River in Brgy. Conchu, Trece Martires City, Cavite.

 

One hundred (100) Kawayang Tinik seedlings were planted by sixty-two (62) volunteers (comprised of 27 males and 35 females) coming from the Catholic Women’s League; Officials and local communities of Barangay Conchu; and, selected staff of DENR PENRO Cavite.

 

Barangay Chairperson Irene Aure extended her appreciation to DENR PENRO Cavite for holding the said event in their barangay. Aure emphasized that these planting initiatives could be a great way to alleviate the adverse impacts of climate change in which she pledged that they will take part towards environmental conservation and protection following her closing message “𝘴𝘢 𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘺, 𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘬𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘯”.

 

Meanwhile, Cavite PENR Officer Januel R. Peras emphasized the benefits that can be get from bamboo such as food, textiles, and even poles for construction. He also highlighted that bamboos are good at preventing soil erosion which is why it is commonly planted along the river easements. Further, Peras left a reminder that bamboo is not a tree but instead one of the species of the grass family.

 

Before the planting proper, Foresters Alexandra Jane B. Tandang and Rexmel Telan demonstrated the proper handling and planting of bamboo culms to ensure a high survival rate.

 

The celebration of Philippine Bamboo Month was proclaimed by virtue of the Presidential Proclamation No. 1401 dated June 27, 2022 which was conceptualized in support of the Enhanced National Greening Program (eNGP) of DENR, primarily to raise awareness of the importance of bamboo to the national economy and social development. ###
