GUMACA, Quezon ― In celebration of the National Zero Waste Month, the DENR-CENRO Calauag initiated a cleanup drive in a garbage-polluted portion of Pipisik River on 19 January 2022.

With this year’s theme, “Fast Tracking the Total Solid Waste Management Solution for a Sustainable-Driven Philippines,” partakers from Gumaca LGU, Gumaca PNP, and Gumaca Tree Planters and Pallet Makers Association Cooperative (GTPPMAC) joined the drive to improve the Pipisik River located below the Peñafrancia Bridge of the municipality.

The expanse of the said cleanup is the mouth portion of Pipisik River located at the town proper, wherein a bulk of solid wastes from adjacent establishments and residential areas piles up together through the years.

During a short environmental awareness discussion, CENR Officer Joselito D. Barros has encouraged the LGU of Gumaca to enter an MOA with the DENR under the “Tayo Ang Kalikasan” (TAK) that will aim for the cleaning and improvement of Pipisik River. He added that proper waste disposal and segregation are also beneficial in reducing the waste in rivers.

A total of thirty-eight (38) sacks of solid wastes had been collected, composed mainly of diapers, plastic bottles, and wrappers of candies, soaps, and other convenience products.
