In observance of the World Wetlands Day 2021 and the 50th Anniversary of Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, PENRO Cavite thru the Compliance Monitoring Unit (CMU) had conducted the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) last January 12 – 16, 2021 within the identified migratory bird sites in Cavite, located in Bacoor City, Noveleta, Kawit and Ternate as newly identified site.

A total of 2,397 heads of varying 39 migratory bird species were counted throughout the census which had 5.50% increase compared the preceding year (CY 2020).

Among the four migratory bird sites, Kawit has the most birds observed, this is mainly due to a vast cover of wetlands which serves as a wintering grounds of the migrating birds.

AWC provides the basis for estimates of waterbird populations, it is a monitoring tool used to determine the distribution and standard counts of birds in wetlands ecosystems.

Moreover, it is vital in determining sites to qualify as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Wetlands are important bird habitats, and birds use them for breeding, nesting and rearing young. Wherein, birds are known to be one of the nature’s pollinator or seed disperser that are essential in reforestation.

Here are some of the threats that may cause adverse impact to our wetlands ecosystems in Cavite;

  1. Household/and industrial wastes produced by informal settler’s infrastructures in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite;
  2. Wildlife disturbance due to the sound generated from motor boats during fishing and other water related activities.

Here are some of the initiatives of PENRO Cavite towards wetlands protection and conservation;

  1. Conduct of regular clean-up activities to lessen and remove the wastes coming from various sources;
  2. Building partnerships to various organizations and groups and exchanging ideas and concepts to further protect these ecosystems;
  3. Extensive Information Education Campaigns (IEC) towards environmental protection and conservation.

Please watch our livestream radio guesting on February 12, 2021 (Friday) as we are about to discuss the importance of wetlands and how it supports biodiversity. It will be discoursed by Mr. Arne Jensen, Chairperson and Records Committee of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines.
