The Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit (WTMU) team of DENR-CENRO Calaca, Batangas conducted strict monitoring of two seaport areas namely, Port Balong Bato in Calatagan Batangas and the Port of Nasugbu Batangas, to ensure the strict compliance and effective implementation of all existing wildlife laws, rules, and regulations.

Activities conducted during the monitoring were accordingly coordinated with the concerned port authorities including the Operational Port Manager and PNP Maritime. Monitoring of passenger ship and outgoing passengers, and inspection of passenger baggage/carry-on baggage, outgoing vehicles and other consumable goods/items, were conducted to ensure that there are no malicious items that may lead to wildlife trafficking.

No wildlife was found upon monitoring, probably because of the people’s awareness of the laws, policies, and regulations that the government imposes on wildlife trafficking and trading. However, the WTMU will continuously monitor the seaport areas, strengthen the partnership and linkages with seaport authorities, and further intensify the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign with regard to wildlife trafficking and related activities.
