The Youth Desk Officers of CENRO Sta. Cruz and PENRO Laguna conducted a Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) activity for the high school students of Talangan Integrated National High School (TINHS) in Brgy. Talangan, Nagcarlan, Laguna.

Ms. Mercedita P. Pabico, the school principal inspired the students by emphasizing the importance of waste management in their school as well as being the leaders of the next generation.

The CEPA focused on Republic Act No. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management of 2000 wherein waste management and sustainable practices were highlighted.  The importance of the youth on their participation as environment advocates were also strengthened on topics such as proper solid waste management, waste segregation, the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) and Avoidance, and composting. This aims to spread awareness and strengthen their importance in environmental conservation as youth advocates. Youths need to make an impact on the environment by getting involved in the community and promote programs and disseminating information about the environment.

The activity was also accompanied by Community PlanTree “Kumuha ng Kayang Alagaan, Magtanim para sa Kalikasan” wherein different seedlings of fruit-bearing trees were distributed to five hundred (500) students and faculty for them to plant in their own backyard. This initiative was intended to encourage youth and teachers alike to participate in the greening program of the Department through backyard planting of trees. A total of 500 seedlings of calamansi (Citrus x microcarpa); guyabano (Annona muricata), and lipote (Syzygium polycephaloides) were given. Upon distribution of seedlings, matching photocards of the species were given to the students. The said photocard show details in the front such as the image of the species, its common name, and scientific name. At the back portion is a QR code which when scanned, shows the fast facts about the species and some tips for backyard production.

A total of forty-six (46) members composed of eleven (11) males and thirty-five (35) females from Youth for Environment in Schools-Organization (YES-O) of Grades 7-12 participated in the said activity.
