A greener Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL) was spotted during the Lawin patrolling of the DENR-CENRO Calaca Enforcement and Monitoring Section staff along a 9.19 km stretch in Brgy. Alas-as and Brgy. Pulang Bato in the municipality of San Nicolas, Batangas on October 10, 2023.

The patrollers were able to witness the regaining beauty of Taal Volcano. Lush green grass covered the lawn at the foot of Taal Volcano, contemplating the grayish ridges that created a neutral- botanical color landscape. Also, several waterbirds including Grey Heron, Black Crowned Night Heron, Purple Heron, Little Egret, Crow, Brahminy Kite, and Plover were seen hovering over the island.

In January 2020, the eruption of Taal Volcano caused the protected area to be coated with thick layers of ash that had wiped out its vegetation, disrupted its ecological processes, and drastically turned the same into a desert-like island.

DENR-CENRO Calaca said the recovery phase or the “complete healing” of Taal Volcano still needs more time, but the observed regrowth of vegetation and the presence of wildlife in a span of three years is undeniably a good sign of new life within the island.

The department continually reminds the public that entry in the island, especially within the vicinities of the Main Crater, without proper coordination with the Coast Guard, LGU, local PNP, and DENR-Protected Area Management Office of TVPL is strictly prohibited, considering that the entire Taal Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone.
