The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Conservation International Philippines (CI PH) for the creation of Calumpang River Watershed Management Council, on October 12, 2023 in Batangas City. 

The agreement aims to institutionalize the cooperation and strengthen the collaboration among the department, stakeholders, and the local government units for the protection and sustainable management of Calumpang River, in line with the establishment of climate resilient communities.

The MOA signing ceremony was attended by DENR CALABARZON Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Jose Elmer Bascos, Batangas PENR Officer Noel Recillo, Lipa CENR Officer Allan Willard Estillore, CI PH Natural Climate Solutions Director Wilbur Dee, Urban Specialist of US Agency for International Development (USAID) Marian Cruz Navata, and Climate Resilient Cities Deputy Chief of Party Erin La Croix.

Located in the province of Batangas, Calumpang River Watershed drains into Batangas City and is considered as one of the most important tributaries of Verde Island Passage Marine Corridor. It has a total area of 39,493.32 hectares and traverses through the cities of Batangas and Lipa and the municipalities of Taysan, Ibaan, Rosario, Padre Garcia, San Jose, Cuenca, Mataasnakahoy and Lobo.

Calumpang River Watershed is a priority sustainable landscape target of the CI PH USAID Climate Resilient Cities Project in Batangas City and is part of nature-based solutions strategy that would contribute to the improvement of climate resiliency in Batangas City and the neighboring municipalities and cities.###
