In line with the celebration of International Coastal Clean-up with this year’s theme “Clean Seas for Healthy Fisheries: Sustainably Feed the Global Population”, DENR PENRO Cavite through the Coastal and Marine Management Unit (CMMU) facilitated the clean-up activity dubbed as “Scubasurero” on September 16, 2023, at Sitio Patungan, Brgy. Sta. Mercedes, Maragondon, Cavite. Scubasurero is a group of divers or individuals who voluntarily join clean-up activity specifically on the reef under the sea. 

One hundred fifty (150) volunteers comprised of ninety-two (92) males and fifty-eight (58) females from different government and non-government agencies have joined the clean-up activity. Said volunteers were from the Municipal LGU of Maragondon; Barangay Officials from Sta. Mercedes; Philippine Coastal Guard (PCG) in Naic and Maragondon; PCG Auxiliary; ICC Philippine Incorporated – Cavite; JAE Philippines Incorporated; Metro South Development Corporation (MSDC); United GIXXER Riders Club; GXS Suzuki Riders Club; Tale 5 Outdoor; DepEd Maragondon; and representatives from DENR CALABARZON and PENRO Cavite.

A total of seventy-six (76) sacks of waste were collected from the three (3) clean-up sites with an approximate weight of 3,600 kilograms (kgs) or 3.96 tons of waste consisting of various types of plastic scraps such as PET bottles, straws/stirrers, food wrappers, footwear, other rubber pieces as well as glass pieces, styrofoam, ghost nets, and other fishing materials. Said wastes were hauled and disposed of by the MENRO of Maragondon.

The ICC is known to be the largest volunteer work geared towards marine conservation and creating unified solutions to the growing debris problem of the country. ###
