MULANAY, QUEZON – CENRO Catanauan, Quezon conducted a Mangrove Clean-up activity last February 2, 2022 in Brgy. Canuyep, Mulanay, Quezon in observance of the celebration of World Wetlands Day with the theme, “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”.

It was conducted through the removal of barnacles, debris, and other waste materials entangled on the stem and leaves of planted mangroves within 52.0 hectares of NGP. The activity was headed by OIC-CENRO Ramil J. Gutierrez together with the CENRO Catanauan personnel, Local Government Unit (LGU) of Mulanay, Quezon headed by Ms. Joelda A. Tadeja, Designated MENRO of Mulanay, Barangay Officials of Brgy. Canuyep, and People’s Organization namely Barangay Fishery and Aquatic Resources Management Council (BFARMC). The plantation was selected because of its high survival rate and presence of assorted wastes, especially plastics that would affect the growth of the planted mangrove species.  Further, the site is a graduated NGP Site of CENRO Catanauan with an area of 52.0 hectares established in CY 2015.

After the mangrove clean-up, a short IEC was held and facilitated by designated Information Officer FT II Elliane Jade P. Gadela purposely to raise awareness on the importance of mangroves in the coastal areas. OIC-CENRO Gutierrez also delivered his speech to all the participants and encouraged the community within the coastal barangay to continue the initiative/action in protecting/conserving the planted mangroves. A total of thirteen (13) sacks of waste were collected within the subject area.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness on the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. It was also adopted by the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971.
