The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON urges private sectors and organizations to volunteer at the Regional Nurseries to conduct nursery activities.

The Mechanized and Modernized Forest Nursery (MMFN) located inside the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and the Regional Seedling Production and Training Facility at Brgy. Lamot II, Calauan, Laguna need volunteers for its maintenance and protection.

Currently, the nursery in Calauan houses more than 65,000 seedlings while the estimated number of seedlings at the MMFN is 35,000, in preparation for the anticipated massive tree growing/nurturing activities regionwide come rainy season.

“Sa ngayon ay kailangan namin ng volunteers to conduct nursery operations dahil hindi kakayanin ng aming mga laborers and staff…masyadong marami ang mga seedlings na kailangan nating i-maintain”, said by Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Eriberto B. Saños.

He added that while it is not yet appropriate to plant trees during summer, interested groups and organizations may volunteer in the maintenance of the seedlings. Some of the assistance needed for the nurseries includes weeding, plant potting, watering, and monitoring and updating of the inventory of seedlings.

From July to November 2023, through the “Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Displaced/Disadvantage Workers (TUPAD) Program” in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), additional workers were hired and mobilized to aid the implementation of forest protection program of DENR CALABARZON. Some of these workers were deployed at the regional nurseries.

“Magmula nang matapos ang TUPAD ay kulang na kulang talaga ang aming tao”, raised by Mr. Gilberto B. Lawas of the Regional National Greening Program Coordinating Office.

Currently, the Laguna Climate Change Adaptation Office of the Laguna Provincial Government commits to mobilize their Barangay Volunteer Workers to assist in the MMFN operations. Yet, further assistance is needed.
