On November 6, 2023, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources CALABARZON entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with Mr. Cecilio Landan Adorna for the establishment of the 2-hectare arboretum in Barangay Dambo, Pangil. Laguna.

Mr. Adorna decided to establish an arboretum project within his titled property in support of the conservation and protection of wildlife found in the said area. Relative thereto, DENR CALABARZON will provide the technical assistance needed in the said establishment such as the selection or profiling of species to be planted, and the provision of available seedlings.

The word “arboretum” comes from the Latin word “arbor” which means tree, and the suffix “-ētum,” which means place, making the meaning “a place of trees”.

Pursuant to the Forest Management Bureau Technical Bulletin No. 19, an arboretum is essentially a well-grown and representative collection of trees maintained for the purpose of reference and a convenient source of seed and herbarium materials for use and exchange. It is a collection of living specimens for scientific studies, conservation of genetic resources, learning area for Dendrology, and for the study of phenology and the reproductive biology of species (ITTO, 2000)1

The signing of the agreement was witnessed by DENR Provincial ENR Officer Eriberto Saños, Sta. Cruz Community ENR Officer Venerando U. Garcia, both of the Province of Laguna and selected staff from PENRO Laguna and CENRO Sta. Cruz their respective offices.
