On February 03, 2022, the DENR CENRO Lipa spearheaded the conduct of the Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaign and Coastal Clean-up activity in celebration of World Wetlands Day at Brgy. Lagadlarin, Lobo, Batangas. The event was participated by 38 volunteers from Barangay Lagadlarin, Municipal Tourism Office, Municipal Agriculture Office, Samahan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Pangangalaga ng Kalikasan sa Barangay Lagadlarin (SMMPKBL), and the staff and personnel of PENRO-Batangas, headed by PENR Officer Noel M. Recillo.

Due to the diverse ridge-to-reef ecosystem of the municipality of Lobo, it was chosen as the venue for this year’s World Wetlands Day celebration, while Brgy. Lagadlarin has various wetland ecosystems - mangroves, swamps, river, rice paddies and coastal areas. The existence of a boardwalk, which continues to be maintained by the Local Government Units (LGUs) and the People’s Organizations (PO), aims to showcase the unique mangrove and wetland ecosystems of Lobo. It also offers opportunities for eco-tourism and livelihood within the communities in the area. The DENR, through PENRO Batangas and CENRO Lipa City, has sustained its efforts in implementing programs aimed at enhancing the wetlands ecosystem in the area through the establishment and maintenance of a mangrove nursery right at the heartland of the renowned mangrove forest of Lobo, Batangas.

Fourteen (14) sacks of solid waste materials were collected with an estimated weight of 21 kilograms. The collected waste materials were turned over to the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) for its proper disposal in compliance with local environmental ordinances.

This campaign seeks to raise awareness of the vital services wetlands provide us and their importance for regulating our climate, reversing biodiversity risk and ensuring a sustainable future for people and nature. Minimum health standards and safety measures against COVID-19 were properly observed and practiced during the activity. ###
