For more than 35 years, the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) has galvanized communities worldwide to collect trash that pollutes our waterways, making our coasts cleaner and our ocean healthier (Ocean Conservancy, 2021).

In this year's celebration of this worldwide observance with the theme, “Understand and Beat Marine Pollution”, CENRO Calauag conducted a simultaneous cleanup activity along the shores of Brgys. Himbubulo Este and Dancalan Central, Guinayangan, Quezon on 21 September 2021.

ICC which is originally celebrated every 3^rd Saturday of September of each year, is the world's largest collective effort of volunteers in sustaining ocean's health.

It is unique among all other cleanups for it has a systematic way of assessing the trashes collected – on which the wastes collected are being itemized and recorded to know the sources of the coastal wastes drifted through the coasts.

During an Information Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign spearheaded by CENRO Calauag, the Marine Ecosystems Management Program (CMEMP) Team able to promote public vigilance against wastes in land and water; and raise awareness on the detrimental effects of marine debris problem in our oceans and environment.

The cleanup along the coasts started at around 8:00 AM, which was participated by ninety-two (92) individuals from CENRO Calauag, Barangay Police, BHW, 4Ps, and volunteer farmers.

After the cleanup, the municipal garbage truck recovered 20 trash bags with an estimated weight of 113 kilos of wastes, of which the 20% and majority were from food wrappers of candy, chips, etc.

The CENRO Calauag, Quezon, through the management and supervision of CENR Officer Joselito D. Barros, will continue to support and conduct this kind of activity in attaining a healthier ocean and environment.
