Calamba City, Laguna - 3rd of March marks the annual worldwide celebration of World Wildlife Day. Themed “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON through its Conservation and Development Division conducted a weeklong wildlife exhibit from March 6-10, 2023.

The exhibit featured selected wildlife discovered in CALABARZON - the Hobbitoblatta lambioe, a newly discovered genus and species of cockroach in the majority of Luzon Island Group; and the Apomys banahao, also known as Mount Bahanaw Forest Mouse which is endemic to Mt. Banahaw - San Cristobal Protected Landscape (MBSCPL).

Collaboration projects with DENR CALABARZON partners were also showcased in the exhibit, the Philippine Eagle Survey conducted with the Philippine Eagle Foundation; NICER Program on Center for Cave Ecosystems Research with the University of the Philippines Los Baños Museum of Natural History; the Sarikulay project with the UP Ecology and Systematics Major Students Society; and with Wildlife Farm Permittees in the Region.

On the other hand, Dr. Marian P. De Leon, Director of the UPLB MNH gave her appreciation for this initiative, “ang pagtitipon na ito ay nakikita namin bilang isang magandang venue para makipag partner with student organizations and other conservation foundation or organizations in the Philippines.” She also initiated the youth to visit museums. “Patuloy po nating pangalagaan ang ating kapaligiran sa magiging appreciation ng mga susunod na henerasyon”, she added.

“Wildlife is integral to our future”, as expressed by Finance Chief Mabel Grasparil, as she represents the Office of Assistant Regional Director for Management Services Ronita Unlayao. In her message, she also highlighted the need for urgent awareness of the declining population of wildlife.

In 2022, DENR CALABARZON has acted on more than a hundred citizen reports on illegal wildlife trade, wildlife rescue, and other related concerns.
