The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) hosted the Kick-Off Ceremony for the National Simultaneous Bamboo and Tree Planting Activity with the theme “Buhayin ang Pangangalaga sa Kalikasan” last September 13, 2022.

The said activity aims to celebrate the vital role of trees in addressing climate change. It also coincides with the 65th birthday of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr, and the Philippine Bamboo Month celebration.

DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said that the activity serves “as a symbol of the new administration’s direction, our national commitment to address climate change, mitigate its effects, and alleviate the risks of vulnerable communities and ecosystems”.

The Old Sanitary Landfill in Brgy. Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo, Rizal was the selected site for the National Kick-off. It started its operations in 1991 under the Metro Manila Development Authority and stopped in 2000. It is a 73-hectare site being rehabilitated under the supervision of the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau, and is situated within the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape. During the Kick-Off ceremony, more than 1,600 bamboo and fruit-bearing trees were planted in a portion of the landfill.
