A cleanup drive was conducted along a tributary of Morong River at Sitio Tumana, Barangay Bombongan, Morong, Rizal on March 23, 2023 in celebration of World Water Day.
Led by Manila Bay Site Coordinating and Management Office (MBSCMO)-Rizal Focal Person Marilyn Paunil and Assistant Focal Person Jenesis P. Eraña, the said activity aimed to clean and maintain the health of rivers while also raising awareness about the importance of a clean river.
The event was participated in by DENR-PENRO Rizal personnel including river rangers, local government unit officials and staff, and Rizal Coast Guard Sub-Station and Bureau of Fire Protection-Morong representatives.
80 sacks of wastes weighing 254 kilograms were collected along a 60-meter stretch of the river; 216 kg of which were biodegradable wastes while 38 kg were non-biodegradable wastes.
Several contributing factors of river pollution include dumping of trash and fecal water, global warming and deforestation, with improper waste disposal as one of the major reasons for pollution. Cleanup drives and other similar activities are not only beneficial in ensuring the cleanliness of the environment, but also in mobilizing the citizens towards participation in such activities.
