Establishment of eco-gardens is one of the activities anchored in San Juan River Rehabilitation in support of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program, which aims to promote waste segregation and increase waste diversion. On September 28, 2022, the Manila Bay Site Coordinating Management Office (MBSCMO) - Batangas conducted orientation which includes lecture on solid waste management, composting and vertical/eco-gardening to capacitate and inform the participating LGUs and communities in preparation for the establishment of eco-gardens and the “Search for the Best Ecological Garden and Solid Waste Management Practices in Sto. Tomas City, Batangas”.

MBSCMO-Batangas Focal Person Josefa Lozada emphasized the significance of maintaining the cleanliness of the environment and the importance of giving value to the bodies of water specially the rivers.

“The portion of San Juan River in Batangas may be only a small fragment of the whole Manila Bay tributaries, however it still reflects significance on the smallest of things”, Lozada shared. She also encouraged the participants to take this program wholeheartedly while she mentioned a brief background on the implementing activities under San Juan River Rehabilitation and the purpose of the program.

The event was attended by the representatives/parent leaders of 4Ps as project beneficiaries from the 12 barangays who will act as team leaders and concerned Barangay Officials assigned for the establishment of eco-gardens. IEC materials in the form of booklets containing information on Republic Act No. 9003, Composting, and Vertical Gardening were also distributed.

City ENRO Eric Velasco graced the activity and expressed his gratitude that this kind of activity materialized through a Memorandum of Agreement and is currently underway. ###
