The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Tayabas City through the Patrol Sector Team under its Monitoring and Enforcement Section (MES) released a Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus) on July 13, 2022, at Mts. Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape (MBSCPL).

The wildlife was voluntarily turned over to CENRO Tayabas by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Pagbilao, Quezon on July 8, 2022.

The medical examination conducted by Dr. Ma. Cecilia P. Martinez, DVM of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian of Quezon, recommended that the wildlife be immediately released to its natural habitat where it can continue its role in the ecological cycle.

In coordination with the Protected Area Superintendent (PASu) of MBSCPL and City Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Tayabas City, the reticulated python was successfully released to the protected area.

Reticulated python is listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species in 2011 as Least Concern, due to its wide distribution in Southeast Asia. It is protected under Republic Act 9147 also known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001. Hunting, collecting, possessing, and poaching of its kind is punishable under this law.

CENRO Tayabas continuously calls the local communities that these types of incidents be immediately reported in order to continuously protect and conserve our biodiversity.
