Signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) by and between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Municipality of Calatagan, Batangas for the drafting of the Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) happened on July 12, 2022. This is under the Executive Order No. 318 (Promoting Sustainable Forest Management in the Philippines) which aims to integrate FLUP into the Comprehensive Land Use (CLUP) of the Local Government to provide direction on the proper management of forests in their jurisdiction.

The said signing was held in the Office of the Municipal Mayor of Calatagan, Batangas. Present in the event is DENR Regional Executive Director Nilo Tamoria, Hon. Mayor Peter Oliver Palacio, OIC-PENRO Batangas Noel Recillo, OIC-CENRO Calaca Isagani Amatorio, MENRO Ma. Emelyn Custodio, MPDO Amalia Caubalejo and other staff of DENR and LGU Calatagan.

“Karangalan para sa amin ang maging bahagi ng programa ng DENR… ang dating (estimated) 76 hektaryang mangrove forest ng Calatagan, ngayon ay nasa 500 hektarya na kaya naman akoy natutuwa na tayo ay magkakaroon ng MOA signing para sa Forest Land Use Plan”, said by Mayor Palacio. The Municipality of Calatagan claims that the conservation and protection of mangrove forest is one of their priority programs, and their continuous effort shows success in mangrove rehabilitation.

“Ang DENR ay nandito upang magbigay ng technical assistance sa pagpaplano sa kung ano ba ang maaring gawin para sa mga bahagi ng kalupaan na napapailalim sa klasipikasyon ng forestland”, RED Nilo Tamoria said as he assures to provide technical assistance to the LGU of Calatagan in the formulation of the FLUP as part of their CLUP. RED Tamoria also highlighted that the agreement is proof of unity between the DENR and LGU Calatagan; an important and bigger challenge lies in its implementation. ###
