A total of 1,335 election campaign materials nailed and tied on trees of National and Local candidates have been removed by the “Operation Baklas Poster Sa Mga Puno” teams of Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Quezon and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Tayabas City headed by its Monitoring and Enforcement Section (MES), along the roads of Barangays Lakawan, Ibabang Alsam, Lawigue, Kanlurang Palale, and Ibabang Palale, all in Tayabas City.

The Oplan Baklas was also in close coordination with the local Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Office of Tayabas City, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO), local government unit of the concerned barangays and intensified Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities.

Under Republic Act 3571, cutting, destroying or injuring of planted or growing trees, flowering plants and shrubs or plants of scenic value along public roads, in plazas, parks, school premises or in any other public ground are prohibited. Oplan Baklas also ensures that the Presidential Decree No. 953 entitled “Requiring the Planting of Trees in Certain Places and Penalizing Unauthorized Cutting, Destruction, Damaging and Injuring of Certain Trees, Plants and Vegetation” is also implemented.

As part of the sustaining activities, Forester Eduardo T. Calamigan, Chief of CENRO Tayabas MES instructed all the Team Leaders of its Patrol Sectors to conduct similar activities within their respective areas; remind the election candidates thru further coordination with the COMELEC to post their campaign materials on designated and common poster areas; and intensify the promotion of environmental-conscious national election campaigns thru IECs.

CENRO Tayabas also reminds those candidates who do not comply, that continuous ignorance on the provisions of these environmental laws could lead to sanctions and may face legal actions thru penalty of 500 PHP-5000 PHP or imprisonment of six (6) months to two (2) years pursuant to PD No. 953. ###
