The DENR PENRO Cavite through the Coastal and Marine Management Unit together with the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) conducted an underwater coastal Clean-up at Corregidor Islands in celebration of the 2022 World Water Day, with a theme “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible”.

The said activity was participated by volunteers from the Philippine Coast Guards of Cavite, Bataan, Malacanang, Coast Guard Aviation Force, Naval Special Operations Group-Cavite, PCG Auxiliary (107th, 108th, 110th, and 125th squadrons), PVAO and professional scuba diver volunteers. The activity is also part of the Marine Environment Protection through Coral Reef Conservation and Rehabilitation of PCG Auxiliary.

The program proper started with a solemn prayer led by Commodore Noemi Alvaran. It was followed by a short briefing of the activity rendered by PCGA Commander Cesar Michael Bredes. The divers collected 35 sacks with an approximate weight of 105 kgs of non-biodegradable wastes within the 250 sq.m area. Moreover, a coastal clean up was also conducted within the 65-meter stretch shoreline of the island wherein 250 kgs (50 sacks) of wastes were gathered.

A total of 355 kgs (85 sacks) of waste were collected composed of single used plastics, worn-out shoes, PET bottles and Styrofoam throughout the clean up activity. The garbage collected will be disposed properly in the waste facility of Mariveles, Bataan. ###
