In celebration of World Wetlands Day 2022, Mangrove Planting was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Community Environment and Natural Resources Office Calaca ( DENR-CENRO Calaca) in partnership with the Fullsteam Shipping Company and Local Government Unit of Calatagan, Batangas this February 2, 2022, in Brgy. Sta. Ana Calatagan, Batangas.

This activity aims to provide knowledge on the importance and proper care of wetlands. It was attended by 40 participants from the DENR CENRO Calaca led by OIC-CENRO Isagani Amatorio, representatives from Fullsteam Shipping Company, Brgy. Officals, Youth, and residents of Brgy. Sta. Ana, Calatagan, and Samahan na ang Adhikain ay Pangalagaan Sta. Ana ang Pangisdaan (SAPSAP) People’s Organization.

Participants of the said activity were able to plant 500 Avicennia marina (Kalapinay) inside the 25-hectare 2016 NGP mangrove plantation. Also, 3 sacks of garbage were collected in the area wherein most of them are plastics entangled in mangroves.

Mangroves are a type of coastal wetlands which provides shoreline stabilization/storm protection services since they act as the frontline defense against incoming storms and minimize their impact by reducing wind and wave action while their roots hold the sediment in place.

Moreover, IEC materials and a lecture on the importance of wetlands were provided during the activity.

Minimum health and safety protocols against COVID-19 virus were properly observed and practiced during the said event. ###
