Thirty-five (35) volunteers comprised of twenty (21) males and fourteen (14) females from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG); Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP); LGU Kawit (MAO & MENRO); and River Rangers of Kawit participated the mangrove planting in Brgy. Sta. Isabel and clean-up drive in Brgy. Wakas, Kawit, Cavite on February 02, 2022.

A total of two thousand (2,000) propagules of Rhizophora sp. were planted within the mangrove area of Kawit situated within the river delta of the Ylang-Ylang River. Meanwhile, 250 kilograms comprised of 100 kgs of biodegradables; 90 kgs of non-biodegradables; and 40 kgs of residual wastes were collected during the clean-up activity.

Municipal Agriculturist Officer (MAO) Ronaldo Lontoc delivered the welcome remarks in an informal program during the event. He conveyed that the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Kawit is in full support towards environmental protection and conservation within their Area of Jurisdiction (AOR), as he stated “Kapag tayo ay umuunlad dapat ang kalikasan ay uunlad din”.

“Sama-samang kooperasyon ang ating kailangan upang mapangalagaan ang mga wetlands and coastal & marine ecosystems sa ating Probinsya” says Forester Alipia Espiritu Chief, Conservation and Development Section. On behalf of PENR Officer Januel R. Peras who attended an equally important event at the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Office, For. Espiritu rendered the inspirational message and shared with the participants the background of the activity. She also expressed her gratitude to all the volunteers who attended the activity. She also said that PENRO Cavite is looking forward to the long-term support of the volunteers in the protection and conservation of Cavite’s environment and natural resources.

The activity was conducted in observance of the yearly celebration of World Wetlands Day with this year’s theme “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”.

World Wetlands Day is being celebrated every 2nd day of February to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet.

We encouraged the general public to take action and be part of the solution contributory to environmental protection and conservation. Our simple ways of cleaning the environment could have an extensive ripple effect when we do it consistently. ###
