An immature black-crowned night heron exposes his injured right leg as he perches above an empty fish cage in Lalaguna Marsh Lopez, Quezon, January 20, during the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) 2022. Birds, usually the large wading ones, have a trait called “pedal resting,” hypothesized as their way of thermoregulation to conserve body heat. Sometimes, they act as such to appear unsuspicious to aquatic prey. However, this time, it is indeed the bird having a disability.
