In the interest of providing relevant information, knowledge and awareness about the safety procedures during the occurrence of hazards or disasters, PENRO Cavite thru its Administrative Section conducted a virtual lecture/webinar for its personnel and staff regarding Disaster Risk Reduction and Management as well as Basic First Aid on September 24, 2021. It was participated-in by fifty-three (53) PENRO Cavite employees comprised of sixteen (16) males and thirty-seven (37) females.

The activity primarily aims to raise the personnel’s preparedness and awareness in times of unexpected dangers and in view of RA 11058 or “An Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof” which aims to provide workers a place of employment free from hazardous conditions that are causing or are likely to cause death, illness or physical harm.

Mr. Timothy John Garcia a National Officer at Zion Emergency and Disaster Rescue Unit served as the resource speaker throughout the lecture. He started the discussion by defining the usual disaster being experienced especially in the office setup, which is earthquake. He also emphasized the importance of being prepared during such occurrences. He also stressed that having a plan where to go in case of entrapment inside a building is necessary to alleviate the possible casualties. It is also important to stay calm and composed amid the earthquake for better decision making. Aside from the occurrence of earthquakes, he also discussed the things to do to prevent fire, wherein he stressed about the P.A.S.S. technique which means Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep in using a fire extinguisher.

As the lecture progresses, Mr. Garcia defined “First Aid” as “the immediate help provided to a sick or injured person until professional medical help arrives or becomes available. It is usually performed by non-experts (or sometimes by an expert in case of an emergency), trained personnel to a sick or injured person.” Moreover, he discussed the usual cases where first aid is performed, such as Cramps, Sprain, Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke, Hyperthermia and Hypothermia, Wounds, and Bone fracture.

An active participation of all sectors in disaster mitigation efforts are vital in securing the safety of the people. Meanwhile, the community must also be aware and participative on various exercises and safety procedures provided by the authority to ease the possible surge of casualties. ###
