CENRO Lipa joins the celebration of MOO 2021

In line with the celebration of the Month of the Ocean (MOO) 2021, DENR CENRO Lipa conducted SCUBAsurero: Underwater and Coastal Clean Up Activity in seafront of Layag Resort and in two (2) dive sites namely Mainit Bubbles and Secret Garden in Brgy. Mainit, Mabini, Batangas.

With this year’s theme, “The Science We Need, for the Ocean We Want”, the activity set off by providing the participants with a series of concise discussion  and information about month of the ocean celebration, green fins and citizen science, and importance of trash data collection. A simultaneous exhibit/ booth were also organized in line also with the theme of the celebration.

A total of twenty-two (22) sacks weighing approximately  248.08 kgs. of wastes   were collected in a 170 meter-coastline and in two dive sites in the said area.

A trash data inventory was conducted after the clean up wherein 56% or majority of the total waste collected are the most likely to find items such as food wrappers,  plastic pieces and bottle caps (plastic and metal). Fishing gears, packaging materials, personal hygiene and other trash including face masks were also collected.

The said activity was made possible through the personnel/staff of CENRO Lipa headed by the Conservation and Development Section including the licensed divers of this Office and was participated in by sixty-four (64) participants including the LGU Mabini Tourism Office, Rural Health Unit- Mabini, Brgy. Officials and residents of Brgy. Mainit and Brgy. Malimatoc I, volunteer divers from different organizations and Philippine Coast Guard-Mabini.

Be informed further that all the precautionary measures and safety protocols re: COVID-19 threat were properly practiced and observed during the said activity.
