Personnel and staff of CENRO Calauag closes the year with a tree planting activity conducted along the banks of Hiwasayan River in Brgy. Dungawan Pantay, Guinayangan, Quezon, Thursday, December 10, 2020.

Headed by OIC-CENR Officer Julieta P. Narte, the CENRO Calauag, in participation of the Samahan ng mga Tenured Migrants ng Maulawin Protected Area (STMMPA), accomplished to plant 1,100 seedlings of πΆπ‘Žπ‘™π‘œπ‘β„Žπ‘¦π‘™π‘™π‘’π‘š π‘–π‘›π‘œπ‘β„Žπ‘¦π‘™π‘™π‘’π‘š (Bitaog) along the erosion-prone areas of Hiwasayan River.

Planting stocks were hauled from the Office Nursery in Brgy. Binutas, Calauag, Quezon to Brgy. Dungawan Pantay, Guinayangan, Quezon.

Based on β€œA Research Compendium for Damaged, Critical & Marginal Watershed Areas” by the DENR-Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau, β€œBitaog” is one of the recommended Philippine native tree species suitable for streambank and flood-prone riverbank stabilization.

Bitaog, having a dark-green leaf, provides a dense cover and  protection against wind erosion and extreme rainfall. It is a deep-rooted tree that can be an excellent natural system to hold the soil and mitigate or prevent soil erosion.

Stipulated in Section 33 of Presidential Decree No. 705 otherwise known as the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines, riverbanks are one of the areas targeted to be reforested for they are part of the important system that provides balance in water flow through different channels.

With this initiative of CENRO Calauag, together with other tree planting activities ensued throughout the year, the Office will continue to perform its duties and responsibilities in protecting and rehabilitating our forest and watershed ― anchoring the programs and projects mandated by the DENR.
