Bird monitoring is being conducted to provide a basis for estimates and monitor changes in waterbird population in all types of natural and man-made wetlands, including, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, ponds, freshwater swamps, mangroves, mudflats, coral reefs, rice fields and sewage farms.

On November 10, 2021, a team from the DENR CENRO Calaca conducted monitoring of the migratory birds in Brgy. Alas-as and Pulang Bato San Nicholas, Batangas which are part of the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL).

Compared to the monitoring conducted last October, it was observed that there are more numbers of migratory birds roosting within the area of TVPL this month of November but most of them were seen in the adjacent Brgy of Alas-as which is Brgy. Pulang Bato. This may have a connection to the greater vegetation growth in Brgy Pulang Bato than in Brgy Alas-as.

Birds from other countries migrate in the Philippines to escape the winter, find shelter, feed and some of them even breed. Most common migratory species observed during the monitoring were Great Egret (Ardea alba) which mainly feed on small fishes in Taal Lake. It was noticed that many juveniles were present this month which can be attributed to their breeding habit. Eggs of Little egret are incubated for a period of 21 to 25 days and the hatched young will leave their nest for about 35 to 50 days.

Additional bird species were also observed in the area such as White-Breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) and Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea). ###

As part of the Enhancement Planting of the Graduated NGP sites under the Enhanced National Greening Program (NGP), the DENR CENRO Lipa in partnership with barangay LGUs of Sto. Niño and Malitlit, Lipa City and People’s Organization - Malitlit Nature Savers Association Inc. (MNSAI), planted more than 163,000 pieces of indigenous seedlings of Molave (Vitex parviflora) and Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) and 50,000 pieces of fruit bearing seedlings of Guyabano (Annona muricata) and Cacao (Theobrama cacao) in 361 hectares of NGP plantation located in Mt. Malaraya Forest Reserve (MMFR), Lipa CIty.

Continuous monitoring and protection activities such as weeding, replanting, brushing and other maintenance activities were recommended to ensure high survival rate of the seedlings by the PENRO Inspection and Acceptance Committee during the monitoring and inspection of the Enhancement Planting in Barangays Malitlit and Sto. Niño, Lipa City, Batangas on October 20, 2021.

DENR CENRO Lipa regularly conducts monitoring of established NGP sites from year 2011 to 2016 within its jurisdiction pursuant to Executive Order No. 26, which aims to plant 1.5 billion of trees in 1.5 million hectares of land of the public domain. Moreover, enhancement and rehabilitation of the 7.1 million hectares of the remaining unproductive, denuded and degraded forestlands is being conducted in line with the Executed Order No. 193 or the Expanded National Greening Program in 2015. ###

Lipa City, Batangas – DENR CENRO Lipa recently presented to the members of the Forest Land Use Planning Committee, Technical Working Group, and City Development Council in the presence of Lipa City Chief Executive, Mayor Eric B. Africa, the Draft Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) for the City. The participatory and responsive Forest and Land Use Plan of the City of Lipa is a ten-year plan covering the year 2022-2031. The Forest Land Use Planning (FLUP) is a participatory process which aims to integrate and mainstream the management of forest and forest lands to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) of a municipality or city.

For Lipa City, the FLUP covers the 1,286.12 hectares of forest land area within the Mt. Malaraya Forest Reserve, in Barangays Sto. Niño, San Celestino, Talisay, and Malitlit. The forestland of Lipa City exhibits a remarkable natural forest attributed to its wide range of flora and fauna.

Prior to the finalization of the plan, series of activities were conducted such as planning and consultation meeting/workshop, field visits, creation of technical working group committee, formulation and signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), generation of maps, and allocation and prioritization of subwatersheds.

The presentation activity was graced with the presence of Honorable Mayor Eric B. Africa and members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, key officials of the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO), City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) and the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR). The presentation of the draft FLUP of the City of Lipa is in line with the strengthened DENR-LGU partnership on the conservation and protection of the environment and sustainable utilization and development of the natural resources of the State. ###
