Catanauan, Quezon - In line with the Arbor Day Celebration this 25th of June with this year's theme "Forest, Health and Wellness: The Role of Forestry and Forest Management in Promoting and Sustaining Health and Wellness", Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Catanauan, Quezon conducted a Tree Planting Activity at Catanauan river located in Brgy. Canculajao, Catanauan, Quezon.

As part of the implementation of DENR Priority Programs, the activity was pursued amid COVID-19 pandemic, which was participated by Thirty (30) CENRO Catanauan personnel and was assisted by the Barangay Police.

CENRO Catanauan set a challenge to plant 10 seedlings per participant during the tree planting activity, with a total of 300 Kalumpit seedlings planted along the riverbank. It aims to plant more trees in a certain period of time for the activity was undertaken by a small number of people at this time of pandemic.

Kalumpit (Terminalia microcarpa) is an indigenous tree species that is good for riverbank stabilization and its fruit can be beneficial as food for the neighboring communities as well as for wildlife.

The activity was conducted cautiously by observing proper physical distancing and other health measures to prevent possible spread of the virus.

"We should still continue to perform our mandate following the current safety protocol during this troubled time. We wanted to instill awareness on the importance of trees, especially in the river system to help prevent soil erosion and degradation for continuous benefits to the communities" CENRO Barros said.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between DENR Region IV-A CALABARZON and Barangay Unit of Canculajao, Catanauan, Quezon will be formulated for the protection and maintenance of the 300 kalumpit seedlings for a period of 3 years. ###
