Calamba City, Laguna – As a contribution to the celebration of the World Wildlife Day (March 3), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON and Provincial Government of Laguna (PGL) renewed its partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the operation and maintenance of the DENR 4A CALABARZON Regional Wildlife and Rescue Center (RWRC) and Seedling Production and Training Facility on March 12, 2020, that is valid for the next ten years.

DENR CALABARZON and the Provincial Government of Laguna initiated the partnership that began in 2009. The collaboration gave rise to the RWRC and the Regional Seedling Production and Training Facility in Barangay Lamot II in Calauan, Laguna.

The RWRC has served as a site for educational field exposure for aspiring Veterinarians and other students from Universities and Colleges coming from various Provinces. As of February 2020, the center caters to 176 wildlife species – including amphibians, arachnids, birds, mammals, and reptiles. One of the current residents in the RWRC is the Luzon Bleeding Heart which was rescued in Lipa City. This bird has a Near Threatened IUCN Conservation Status. This bird will be released at the Maulawin Spring Protected Landscape in Guinayangan, Quezon later this month.

The Regional Seedling Production and Training Facility remains a home to Philippine Native Trees wildlings being nurtured, which were collected from the various forests in CALABARZON, and also home to close to a million native trees seedlings that are being prepared for out-of-planting.

The Facility has provided hundreds of thousands of high-quality planting materials to various stakeholders even outside of the Region. DENR CALABARZON also provided technical assistance in many tree planting activities region-wide.

Both parties showed strong commitment to sustain their collaboration in the conservation, management and protection of our natural resources.
