DENR CALABARZON is urging the public to report establishments/ restaurants selling Tawilis during the closed season, from March 1 until April 30. What you may be ordering may have been frozen since February.

The IUCN has listed Sardinella tawilis as an endangered species. During the Tawilis Summit held last February 19 at the University of Sto. Tomas, España, Manila with the theme: “4TS: Talakayan Tungkol sa Tawilis at Taal”, the Philippine Society for Freshwater Science (PSFS) ended with an official statement of support for the conservation and sustainable management of Sardinella tawilis and Lake Taal. The highlights of the statement as follows:

1. Implementation of close season for the months March and April, as well as the mesh size to be used for fishing, and the creations of sanctuaries in the lake;
2. Participations of government agencies and stakeholders, such as DENR, NFDI, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Local Government Units (LGUs) and the fisherfolk organizations for strong law implementation;
3. Regular monitoring of the Taal lake;
4. Annual progress reports to evaluate the effectiveness of the initiatives;
5. Involvement of the academe for research programs which aims to remove the Tawilis as an endangered species; and
6. Relocation of the Taal Lake Circumferential Road (TLCR).
