Gakakan tree for the Society of Filipino Foresters 65th Anniversary

Pulhin in planting a Gakakan (Drypetes falcata) seedling at the UPLB CFNR grounds at the foothills of Mount Makiling as Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc. (SFFI) National President Tommy Valdez (5th from left) and other foresters look on. The planting of the Gakakan ushers in the 65th Anniversary Celebration of the SFFI from October 23-25, 2013 at the UPLB. The Gakakan is a slow growing indigenous forest tree species found in Batanes and Camiguin Islands in North Luzon. Its wood is good for furniture and for back and sides of guitars and other string musical instruments. Evergreen and wide-leafed, the Gakakan is also good for parks and gardens. The SFFI 65th Anniversary Celebration, which has for its theme “The Filipino Forester: Facing Challenges now, Gearing Up for the Future,” had DENR Secretary Paje as keynote speaker. DENR Secretary Ramon JP Paje is a Forestry graduate of the UPLB CFNR and is a member of the SFFI.
