          The participants with the organizers and facilitators of the DENR 4A 2017 Statistical Quiz conducted on October 23, 2017 at the ERDB Social Hall, UPLB, College, Laguna, in celebration of the 28th Statistical Month with the theme: “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards Ambisyon Natin 2040.

          The month of October was marked as National Statistics Month (NSM) in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by former President Corazon C. Aquino. The celebration of the National Statistics Month aims to promote, enhance and instill awareness and appreciation on the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society; and to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

           Nowadays, we are living in the Information age where statistics play a vital role in our daily life. Statistics are used to analyze what is happening in the world around us. When statistics used correctly, it can tell us any trends in what transpired in the past can be valuable in predicting what may happen in the future. Moreover, in the field of Environment and Natural Resources, statistics is one of the most reliable information and contain facts that can be used by ENR managers in decision making.



          To participate in the nationwide celebration of the Statistics Month, the DENR CALABARZON Region led by the Planning and Management Division held a region-wide statistical quiz last October 23, 2017, at the Ecosystem Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) Social Hall UPLB, Los Baños, Laguna. This year theme is “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions towards Ambisyon Natin 2040”.
In addition to its objective of instilling awareness on the importance of statistics, the quiz also intends to promote camaraderie and friendly competition among the employees of the DENR CALABARZON Region and it also serves as a refresher for the senior employees on ENR statistics.
ARD for Management Services Arturo E. Fadriquela quoted on his opening message “Statistics is very important to our work as a public servant because we should work with facts, especially to those employees positioned as Division and Section Chiefs”.

          The contest was partook by five (5) teams from the Regional and Provincial Offices of DENR CALABARZON. Each team consisted of two (2) members; (1) male and (1) one female.

          For the Regional Office, three (3) technical divisions joined the contest: Enforcement Division (ED), Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and Survey and Mapping Division (SMD) embodied by teams of questors, namely; For. Ernesto M. Diso, Jr. and For. Euprecina E. Limpiada; Dr. Josephu Angelus F. Palomar and Ms. Violeta P. Masagnay; and Engr. Arthur M. Balatbat and Ms. Melen C. Carandang, respectively.

           Meanwhile, for the Provincial Offices, only PENRO Cavite and PENRO Laguna took part in the activity. The PENRO Cavite was represented by Mr. Geronimo L. Lopez and Ms. Judaline A. Fabro while for the PENRO Laguna, Ms. Bernardita C. Daliva and Mr. Mitchelle A. Lachica stood for their office.

          The contest is composed of three (3) rounds: Easy, Average and Difficult. Each round consists of 10 questions with corresponding points; the Easy round is equivalent to one point, while Average round has corresponding two points and three points for the Difficult round. Set of questions for the contest revolved on the topics of biodiversity, mining, environment, forestry, lands statistics and other environmental current events.

          The activity was said to be successful for all the participants competitively answered all the questions given to them. As the activity concluded, the winners have been announced by the facilitators. The PENRO Laguna achieved the Second Runner-up attaining 27 points and received a cash prize of P 4,000.00, while the Enforcement Division bagged the First Runner-up with 29 points which also received a cash prize amounting to P 7,000.00 and for the grand champion of the contest, garnering a score of 36 points, Mr. Geronimo L. Lopez and Ms. Judaline A. Fabro of PENRO Cavite took the pride of bringing home the prestige. They received a cash prize amounting to P 10,000.00 and a Certificate of Recognition. Moreover, other offices who participated in the contest received a consolation prize and also awarded with Certificate of Recognition for their active participation.
