 “Eat healthy, even in times of calamity”


“Mahalaga na mabantayan and nutrisyon, lalo na ng mga pamilyang nasa apektadong lugar [ng bagyo]. (The nutrition must be ensured, especially those of families affected by calamities),” thus declared Lourdes Bulante Nutrition Officer III of the National Nutrition Council-Region 4A.

Bulante spoke of nutrition in emergencies when she served as resource person during the Monday, July 21, 2014 convocation of employees of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 4A CALABARZON in Calamba City, in observance of the Nutrition Month of July emphasizing this year’s theme “Kalamidad paghandaan, gutom at malnutrisyon agapan!”

Bulante said, “Families affected by calamities are vulnerable to illnesses due to exposure to the elements. Hence, ensuring their nutrition is a must.”

She shared the “family emergency preparedness checklist”, which included water and canned goods among many others. According to her, the three-day supply of the following must be prepared to ensure the nutrition of the family members even during a calamity:
• Water stored in clean plastic bottles (2L for drinking and 2L for food preparation and cleaning per person, per day)
• Canned sardines/meat/fruits/vegetables
• Canned juices/milks for adults
• Cup noodles
• Dried fish/fruits
• High energy foods – peanut butter, crackers, and jelly
• Foods for infants or elderly/persons on special diet
• Comfort foods- biscuits, hard candy, instant cereal, instant coffee
• Paper cups and plates

Nurse Joyce Anne Lambiquit of the DENR Calabarzon Gender and Development (GAD) Program office and Nutrition Month activities coordinator said, “Disease prevention, health promotion and education for DENR-IVA employees is one of the goals of the office of GAD.”


Lambiquit encouraged the employees to be health conscious and overcome the fear of “knowing that they are not healthy.” She likewise advised them to consult with health professionals to guide them in their health regimen.



GAD has organized the Monday “discussion and free nutrition consultation”.

DENR Calabarzon Regional Director Reynulfo A. Juan appreciated NNC 4As’ nutrition officer Lourdes Bulante’s inputs and Nutrition Month celebration’s timeliness as he shared some experiences with the typhoon ‘Yolanda’ (international code Haiyan) and the more recent typhoon ‘Glenda’ (international code Ramassun). He said he visited several municipalities in Laguna province to assess damage wrought by Glenda.

A “Wellness” team from Nestle, led by coordinator Godz Villabrosa, offered free nutrition consultation. The team’s nutritionist Carmen del Coro, recommended a proper diet for each employee based on their reported Body Mass Index (BMI), body fat percentage and lifestyle. She explained the proper food and exercise either for gaining, reducing or maintaining weight.
